Nurse Rachel's Tip: It is National Dental Month

Dental Health for your Child
Did you know that The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend that you take your child for his or her first dental visit should within six months after the baby's first tooth appears, but no later than the child's first birthday?  This may seem early, especially when your child may only have several teeth.  The reasoning behind this is so the dentist can educate you about cleaning children’s teeth, diet, fluoride and other issues.  Think of this as any regular check up with your child’s pediatrician.  The dentist can answer questions and will also check for problems.  It is good for your child to meet the dentist prior to any emergencies.  This helps to ensure a smoother visit for cleanings or when there are problems.

If you are looking for a dentist, it is best to see what type of dental insurance you have.  You can check with your insurance to find out what local dentists are in network.  There are family dentists who see children as well as pediatric dentists.  Choose the one that works best for your family.
